How Chiropractic treatments can make your pregnancy a little easier
Pregnancy can both be a joyous time but also a time that takes a toll on your body. Growing a little human is hard work and those that have either been/are or know somebody that has been pregnant can agree with that. So why not do things that can help you a long the way. Research shows that correct alignment of the pelvis and spine can contribute to a more straight forward and less traumatic labour for both mother and baby. Now who wouldn’t want to test that theory out?
One of the main problems we see with pregnancy other than lower back pain is Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP), this can affect up to 50% of women during pregnancy and/ or after birth. While 25% of women can experience serious pain, 8% experience severe disability. Recent research may show persistent PGP a major individual public health issue up to 14 months postpartum and sometimes even longer dependent on how long you may breast feed for.
During pregnancy the body produces a hormone called relaxin, which softens the ligaments in the pelvis and joints to help the baby pass through the pelvis during birth. This is obviously a great thing but in turn it can cause mechanical joint problems as changes or asymmetry in normal
movement occurs. Although not harmful to the baby it can cause moderate to severe pain in the pubic bone area as well as pain in the hips, lower back, buttocks, groin and even inner thighs. Symptoms can be aggravated also by posture as the baby increases weight making it difficult doing simple things such as walking, climbing stairs and can often disturb sleep in a time when sleep is vital to be getting.
Chiropractic Treatment can be effective in returning joints and muscles in and around the pelvis to their “normal” function. The specific low force adjustments of McTimoney chiropractic make them as comfortable as can be to receive and well suited during or after pregnancy. Here at Idyllic Wellbeing we also have a specifically made pregnancy pillow which allows patients to lay comfortably on their front taking all pressure off of their bumps and breasts.
